According to the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, housing starts in Canada plummeted 22% from a month earlier to 236,106 units in December 2021, falling short of market estimates of 270,000 units (CHMC).
Urban starts fell by 24%, owing primarily to a 29% drop in multiple urban starts to 157,687 units, while single-family urban starts fell by just 4% to 55,231 units. A seasonally adjusted annual rate of 23,188 rural starts was estimated.
